While there are a myriad of different ways to detoxify the body, practiced by many cultures for centuries, all the methods share the same purpose: to cleanse, nourish, rest and reset. Detoxing is arguably even more imperative in today’s society, where stress, pollution and malnutrition are ever on the rise.
But what is detoxification? Why do you hear people talking about cleansing, juicing or fasting? What’s the point? Truth is, our bodies are put through A LOT. (Can we just take a moment to thank our bodies for all they do for us!?) They are constantly bombarded by toxins from our environment, food and even personal care products. Stress also plays a huge role in how effectively the body can maintain optimum health and wellbeing.
Our bodies naturally detoxify on some level every day. We eliminate toxins through our lymphatic system, lungs, liver, kidneys, intestines and skin. But sometimes--the body’s systems are compromised by stress, poor diet, etc. and are unable to filter toxins as well. Sometimes the symptoms show up as: unusual fatigue, puffy/dark circles under eyes, sluggish elimination, problematic skin, mental sluggishness, allergies, infection, bloating or digestive issues. Detoxing is not a one-size-fits-all program; only you can decide what is best for YOU. That said, here are some ideas on ways to cleanse your body! You can start as small as you’d like and create a personal program that feels good to you.
-Start by removing: alcohol, cigarettes, fast food, processed food, caffeine, soda, refined sugar. Many of you may also want to eliminate any/all of the following: saturated fats, GMOs, meat, dairy, soy, gluten, some or all grains.
-Also eliminate your use of chemical products: from household cleaners to personal care items like shampoo/conditioner, body wash, deodorant, lotion, skin and makeup products. Swap these for all natural and organic options.
-Organic vegetables! Organic Fruit! Organic whole foods. Eat foods that don’t have ingredients but actually are ingredients.
-Organic detox herbs, teas or supplements, such as dandelion, burdock, milk thistle or aloe.
-Eat plenty of fiber to support proper elimination. (Good sources: most veggies, fruit, brown rice, psyllium husk.)
-Drink a lot of (filtered) water--maybe even more than the recommended 64 oz. a day. Water helps flush your body of toxins and promotes healthy elimination and happy skin. Remember to reduce waste by eliminating single-use cups and using your own refillable, plastic-free water bottle. Fill it with pure, fresh, filtered water. Reverse Osmosis water is a great option as is Alkaline water.
-Breathe deeply to allow proper oxygen and circulation to all your body’s cells.
-Sweat! Exercise is such an important part of a healthy lifestyle, and sweating is one of the most effective ways to remove toxins from your body. Yoga, qi gong, walking and swimming are all great forms of exercise to do while cleansing. Adequate daily movement is critical in keeping your blood flowing and body functioning at its best. Sitting in a sauna can be a beneficial way to detoxify through sweating, too.
-Meditation, prayer, affirmations, visualization, mantras, sound healing and/or color therapy are all wonderful additions to add to your detox plan. There are countless methods, programs and even apps nowadays that help relax and reset the mind.
-Drybrush your body to stimulate the lymphatic system and detoxify your skin. This is best done before showering while your skin is dry. You can use a pumice stone or a long-handled body brush made for drybrushing. This link gives a quick and easy rundown of how (and why) to dry brush.
-Cleanse and exfoliate your body (find your fave scent and get washin’ and scrubbin’ at www.100percentpure.com) Search: shower gels and body scrubs.
-Use a bath soak like our 100% PURE Seaweed Detox Bath. Our intensely detoxing bath made with organic ginger root, seaweed, dandelion, eucalyptus, tea tree and rosemary increases circulation, draws out toxins and stimulates lymphatic drainage to remove heavy metals and other impurities. This therapeutic bath is full of of vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and necessary trace elements.
-Get a massage. Sounds relaxing, right? Massages benefit both body and mind. They get your blood circulating properly and help relax you. Be sure to sufficiently hydrate afterward to help move the toxins out of your body. -Try hydrotherapy at home or at a spa. Or try a detoxing foot soak.
-Cleanse, exfoliate your face, then use our 100% PURE Herbal Detox Mask. We are all exposed to environmental toxins. This detoxifying mask deep cleans facial pores for a fresh, purified complexion. Use regularly to minimize pores, black and white heads. This formula is nourishing and packed full of nutrients for healthy, clarified skin.
-My acupuncturist, Anna Mai Acupuncture, recommends placing something warm, like a heating pad, above your liver. This organ does so much for us in filtering out toxins! Give it a little love; by applying some heat, blood circulation increases and the liver can do its job better.
The above are all simple ways to give your body the support it needs to rest and reset. You can pick and choose however many tips that work for you. You may want to research these different types of cleansing programs:
-Simple fruit and veggie cleanse
-Ayurvedic Cleanse: This is a great, healthy cleanse suitable for all types of people, gentle and supportive for the whole body. It is especially beneficial during the transition of seasons, when our bodies are most susceptible to disease.
Depending on the type of cleanse, its duration can be anywhere from a day to over a week. Personally, I’m a fan of doing a simple cleanse (especially after travel or a change in my usual diet/routine). I like to do smoothies, salads and a light soup throughout the day, with all organic produce. This allows my body to still get the daily nutrients it needs, without starving it and without stressing or overtaxing my adrenals or digestive system.
